A spaceport the size of a city
KSC covers a staggering 219 square miles—larger than the entire city of San Francisco! It is one of the most expansive spaceports in the world and features multiple launch pads, testing facilities, and research centers. The vast complex includes Launch Complex 39, originally built for the Apollo program, and now actively used for Artemis missions and private spaceflight ventures.
Hollywood loves the Kennedy Space Center
Hollywood has used the Kennedy Space Center as a backdrop for many space-themed films. Parts of the recent romantic comedy Fly Me to the Moon (2024), starring Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum, were filmed at Kennedy Space Center. Other notable films include the James Bond movie Moonraker (1979), which featured scenes in the Vehicle Assembly Building, and SpaceCamp (1986), an adventure film about kids accidentally launching into orbit. Ron Howard’s Apollo 13 (1995), starring Tom Hanks, also utilized the center for its gripping retelling of the ill-fated mission.
Home to the largest rocket ever built
The Saturn V rocket, the powerhouse behind the Apollo missions, is the most powerful rocket ever launched. Standing at 363 feet tall, it’s longer than a football field and generated 7.5 million pounds of thrust at liftoff. This rocket played a crucial role in landing the first humans on the Moon in 1969. Today, a fully restored Saturn V is on display at the Apollo/Saturn V Center, allowing you to marvel at its sheer size and engineering brilliance.
Launch Complex 39A’s legendary past
Launch Complex 39A, originally constructed for the Apollo program, became the launch site for Apollo 11, the first mission to land humans on the Moon. Later, it served as a launch pad for the Space Shuttle program, witnessing more than 80 shuttle liftoffs. Today, SpaceX leases 39A for its Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy launches, including crewed missions to the International Space Station (ISS) and future Mars expeditions.
A building so big it creates clouds
The Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB), standing 525 feet tall, is one of the largest buildings in the world by volume, covering 8 acres. It was originally built to assemble Saturn V rockets and later housed Space Shuttles. The building is so vast that it has its own microclimate, with clouds occasionally forming near the ceiling on humid days. The American flag painted on the building is 209 feet tall, making it one of the largest painted flags in the world!
The space shuttle’s last stop
After completing 33 missions in space, Space Shuttle Atlantis found its permanent home at the KSC Visitor Complex. Suspended in midair at a 43.21-degree angle, the orbiter is displayed as if it were in orbit, giving you an up-close view of its heat-shield tiles, payload bay, and robotic arm. The exhibit also features a Shuttle Launch Experience simulator, offering a taste of what astronauts felt during liftoff.
A wildlife sanctuary in disguise
Despite being a hub for cutting-edge space exploration, KSC is also a protected wildlife refuge, home to over 330 species of animals, including alligators, bald eagles, manatees, and even the endangered green sea turtle. The center is part of the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, covering 140,000 acres of diverse habitats, from marshes to coastal dunes. You might spot a bobcat or an osprey nest while waiting for a rocket launch!
The first step to Mars starts here
KSC is the launch site for NASA’s Artemis program, aims to return humans to the Moon and lay the groundwork for future Mars missions. The Space Launch System (SLS), the most powerful rocket ever built, will lift off from Launch Complex 39B, carrying astronauts aboard the Orion spacecraft. Artemis missions will test new deep-space technologies, preparing for the first crewed Mars mission in the coming decades.
